About the Landfill Proposal

August 24, 2011

Tolson & Associates plans to build a 72-acre Landfill just south of Piney Orchard and Four Seasons Communities on land once used by a sand and gravel mining operation owned by Cunningham Excavating. The Maryland Department of Environment has drafted an approved permit for the Landfill which is in Phase III of their Land Management Permit approval process. Several years ago MDE had rejected many permits for landfills on the site including a plan from Cunningham to extend its existing landfill. Cunningham’s application was rejected by the MDE mainly due his environmental record, however the application from Tolson & Associates essentially is the same with a different name.

POST Under Construction

STOP Tolson & Associates Rubble Landfill

August 24, 2011

The State of Maryland is Considering Approving a Permit for a Landfill Right Next to GORC Park!

This proposed landfill would be less than 2,000 feet from the Island Pool, the Maple Ridge, Pinedale Courts, Piney Station, Settlers View, Summit Chase, Fieldstone Farm Apartments, Station House, Chapel Village, and Francis Station communities, and less than half a mile to the Brookwood, River Colony, and Stone Crossing communities.

VOLUNTEERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED TO BE SURE WE GET AS MANY WRITTEN COMMENTS ON THE RECORD OPPOSING THIS PERMIT BEFORE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2011.

If we all don’t work to stop this, this landfill will:

  • Emit noxious Hydrogen Sulfide gas – same smell as rotten eggs –that would reak all over Piney Orchard for up to three miles or more
  • Increase noise starting every day at 7 AM, at or above allowable levels.
  • Release 22 tons of fugitive dust into the air per year, with the unhealthiest particles falling into our parks, pools, neighborhood and your home.
  • Lower Property Values in Piney Orchard by $161 million or more
  • Increase traffic on Route 3 with nearly 30 trucks per hour.
  • Produce runoff into the Patuxent River watershed and Chesapeake Bay.
